Out of the same truck that pours your driveway we cast four cylinders. Two get crushed at seven days and two at twenty-eight, on a calibrated machine, and you get the report. It is the only way the strength you were sold stops being an adjective.

The object

One cylinder, and the whole argument sits on it.

The fracture drawn here is a cone and split, which is what a properly consolidated cylinder does when it fails. A cylinder that shears off at an angle or crumbles at one end usually means it was made badly, not that the concrete was weak, and that is why the technician records the fracture pattern alongside the load. A break report with no fracture type on it is half a report.

Below is what one of ours looks like. Every figure on it comes off the same batch that went into the ground, and the twenty-eight day line is the one the whole trade quotes and almost nobody measures on a residential job.

Three questions

You are holding three quotes and they are three numbers. Here is how to turn them into a comparison.

We would rather you asked all three of us than took our word for it. If a contractor cannot answer these at the kitchen table, that is the answer.

What strength, and how thick?

Two numbers, and they should come back without a pause. Exterior flatwork in this climate wants 4,000 to 4,500 psi, and the thickness should be a question about what parks on it rather than a default.

If the answer is "standard mix", it is a 3,000 psi mix. Nobody says "standard" about 4,500.

What is going under it, and who compacts it?

Depth of granular base, what it is compacted to, and whether that happens with a plate or a roller. This is the one that decides whether the slab is still flat in ten years, and it is invisible the day the job is finished.

The base is where a low bid finds its money, because you cannot see it from the driveway.

When do you cut the joints, and how deep?

Same day, early-entry saw, a quarter of the slab depth, panels near square. The answer tells you whether the crew comes back the evening of the pour or turns up whenever the next morning suits them.

Concrete cracks. The only question is whether it cracks where somebody decided or where it felt like it.

Cut the evening of the pour, a quarter of the slab deep. Everything after this is maintenance.
The pour window

This is a freeze-thaw climate, and the calendar is part of the spec.

Kansas City runs roughly thirty five to forty freeze-thaw cycles in a year, which puts exterior flatwork here in an exposure class that most of the country never has to think about. It is also why the schedule is not infinitely flexible and why we will tell you to wait rather than pour into a bad week.

Air rising through the fifties, long cure windows, low evaporation. This is when we would like to pour your driveway and it is also when everybody else would, so it books out first.

Jun to Aug

Hot and windy

Above ninety with wind is a plastic shrinkage problem, not a comfort problem. Early starts, evaporation retarder, and sometimes we move the pour to the following week.

Sep to mid-Nov

The second window

The best finishing weather of the year. Below forty degrees we are into blankets, heated mix and an accelerator, all of which we will quote rather than absorb quietly.

Mid-Nov to Mar

Mostly no

We will do interior slabs and repairs. We will not pour a driveway into ground that is about to freeze and then tell you in April that it was one of those things.
